How to choose a drawer runner

Five things decide which drawer runner is right for your application.

  • Slide length: Slide length is the length of the runner when fully closed. Measure the internal depth of your cabinet and choose the longest slide that fits, as a longer slide gives better support and access to more of the drawer. If your exact size is not listed, the configurator shows close matches within 25mm.

  • Load rating: Load ratings are given for a pair of slides mounted on the sides of the drawer. Add the weight of the drawer itself to the weight of its contents, then allow a safety margin. Choose a higher rating if the drawer will face shock or vibration, such as in vehicles or mobile equipment, or if it is very wide. Mounting slides flat under a drawer greatly reduces their capacity, so speak to our team before mounting this way.

  • Extension: Full extension slides open the whole length of the drawer, giving clear access to the back. 3/4 extension slides open around three-quarters of the way and suit lighter, lower-cost furniture where full access is not needed.

  • Side space: Side-mounted runners need a gap between the drawer and the cabinet on each side, matched to the thickness of the slide. Too little space causes binding; too much leaves the drawer loose. Check the product drawing for the exact clearance.

  • Special functions: Some applications need more than a smooth slide. See the functions below.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure for a drawer runner?

Measure the internal depth of the cabinet from the front edge to the back panel, then choose the longest slide length that fits within that depth. Slide length is always the closed length of the runner.

Is the load rating per slide or per pair?

Per pair. A pair of runners rated at 45kg will carry a drawer and contents weighing up to 45kg in total when side mounted.

What is the difference between drawer runners and drawer slides?

Nothing. They are two names for the same product. Drawer runner is more common in the UK and drawer slide in the US.

Why do lock in lock out slides have left and right-hand part numbers?

The locking lever sits on one side of the slide, so each drawer needs a left hand and a right hand runner. Order one of each per drawer.

Can I mount drawer runners under the drawer?

Our GS ball bearing runners are designed for side mounting. Mounting them flat greatly reduces the load they can carry, so contact our team before choosing this option.

Can I get a sample or CAD drawing?

Yes. We offer free samples and CAD drawings so you can test fit before you order. Request them from the product page or contact our team.

What if I cannot find the size I need?

The configurator shows close matches within 25mm of your chosen length. If none of those suit, our team can advise on alternatives from our wider range. We can also source runners with load ratings up to 2,400kgs to suit a huge range of applications.
